HOW TO CHOOSE THE DYE?

The first step is to choose the product to dye your hair at home. In addition to natural dyes, such as henna, you usually find two types of colorations: permanent or semi-permanent. The semi-permanent leaves with the washes and usually lasts about 4 weeks. The permanent does not go with the washing, but you will have to touch up the roots, as your hair grows.

Regarding the tone, if you do not like to risk and you want a color similar to the one you are wearing, it is advisable to choose the ones that are suitable for your color, something that usually comes in the dye box.

It is not advisable to change the hair color more than two shades, because you could look very different.

The color of your skin is important when choosing a tone for your hair. For dark skin, the most favored tones are red, brown or black and in case you want a lighter shade we recommend using caramel, chestnut or dark blond tones. For pink or light skin it is more convenient to use lighter shades.

If your hair has many gray hairs, the result may be a little lighter than expected, especially if you apply a very bright color tone.

If your hair is previously colored and you want to apply a tone of a very different color, the result may be less intense than expected, especially if it is a lighter shade than the previous tint.

On the contrary, if you wear a very light blond tint or wicks, the result will be more intense.

When you usually dye with the same tone it is important to do the root retouching application. To do this you must apply 2/3 parts of the mixture only on the part of the roots and after about 20 minutes, apply the rest of the product throughout the hair.

Another factor that you must take into account is the state of the hair. The more damaged the hair is, the more porous it will absorb the color and the more intense or dark it will be, especially at the tips.

HOW TO DYE YOUR HAIR AT HOME, STEP BY STEP

You have already chosen the dye, now you have to read the instructions that all the products include, and follow the instructions for its correct application. If you have never used this dye, it is better to have an allergy test before.

When the time comes, prepare everything you need before, use old clothes that do not mind staining and have a towel handy. Apply Vaseline or a little cream on the contour of the face, on the ears and on the neck, to avoid spots on the skin.

Make the mixture as indicated in the leaflet and apply the dye on your dry hair.

Respect the application times put in the instructions, and that is usually half an hour. Then rinse well until the water comes out clear, to make sure that there are no traces of pigments in your hair.

Some coloring kits include serums, masks or conditioners that you should apply later.

We offer below a selection of the best dyes to be dyed at home.

In our country, nine out of ten women dye their hair or have dyed at some time in their lives. And in 70% of cases, covering gray hair has been the goal, especially after 35 years. The permanent dyes are the most demanded, although the tastes of the consumers are changing.

At present, in addition to a covering and lasting color, products with a higher proportion of natural and less chemical ingredients are sought. We reveal the secrets of all the formulations that are in the market.

WHY GRAY HAIR APPEAR

Those responsible for the color of your hair are the melanocytes, cells that make, just at the root of the hair, a pigment: melanin. Cane appears when the melanocytes stop producing melanin. The aging is primarily responsible, but also influence:

  • Heredity. If your parents or grandparents have had gray hair at a premature age, it is likely that you also have them. The responsible one is the IRF4 gene, according to a recent scientific investigation.
  • Stress, which releases hormones that end up damaging the melanocytes.
  • Other factors, such as the pollution of cities, tobacco smoke, and poor nutrition, favor its appearance.
Foods that can delay your departure

It has been found that the deficit of some minerals (copper, iron, zinc) and vitamins (especially B1 and B2) can produce an increase in gray hair.

Sunflower seeds, Macadamia nuts, pistachios, mushrooms or seafood are rich in these nutrients.

THE “PERMANENT” DYES OF ALL LIFE

These are the so-called oxidation dyes and, although they cover 100% gray hair, they contain chemicals that raise suspicion. It is said to be the preferred color for women over 45 years of age. Partly it is logical because it covers white hair well.

By carrying more chemicals, can cause a reaction to any of its components

However, they increasingly arouse more reluctance because of the substances they contain. In fact, the industry has made an effort to formulate permanent dyes without ingredients such as ammonia, although they are not natural.

To reduce exposure to chemicals, it is advisable not to use them more than 3-4 times a year.

Benefits and disadvantages of this type of dye

  • The pros of using oxidation dyes:
  • They can clarify 2-3 colors your color.
  • The color remains intact. You only have to touch up the root every 21 -28 days.
  • It is easy to apply.
  • The hair is shiny.

And the cons:

  • They contain more chemicals than any other dye.
  • They can cause irritation.
  • The risk of allergies is greater when carrying substances such as resorcinol, parabens, and PPD dye. Before using it apply a little behind the ear and let 48 hours pass to know if it makes you any reaction.
  • There are scientific studies that relate to the appearance of breast and bladder cancer with the use of dark dyes that include PPD. The studies are not conclusive, but if you want to be calmer, avoid this component.

Tricks to apply this type of dyes

1. Extra protection: Apply the dye when at least 3 days have passed since the last wash, and so the sebum on the scalp will act as an insulator for the skin. So that your dye is less aggressive with the skin when you mix it with the revealing cream add a few drops of argan oil.

2. Only the roots: If you dye regularly, do not spread the dye to the tips until 5 minutes before removing it. Otherwise, the root will be clearer than the tips.

BATHS OF COLOR OR “TONE ON TONE”

Actually, this type of dyes are called demi-permanent and have a duration of approximately 10-12 washes in healthy hair. Like permanent ones, they contain oxygenated water to open the cuticle and allow the pigment to penetrate.

They are formulas with fewer chemicals, but they can also produce some allergy

Do not confuse them with semi-permanent dyes, which last only about 4 washes.

Benefits and cons of color baths

  • They are an option if you start to discover some gray hair and want to hide it.
  • They revive the natural tone of the hair, providing shine.
  • They can darken light hair.
  • There is a wide range of colors, which can be mixed together.

And the cons:

  • They do not clarify the hair color.
  • They cover gray hair only 50%.
  • They can give allergic reactions, that’s why you have to do a sensitivity test before.

VEGETABLE DYES, THE MOST NATURAL

The plant coloration has experienced a boom in recent years. There are more hairdressers that offer them and you can also apply them at home.

Leaves of black tea, henna, chamomile, indigo, walnut, rhubarb … These are some of the plants that are part of these preparations.

Benefits and cons of vegetable dyes

  • The pros to apply this type of coloration are:
  • They create unique, subtle and very natural reflexes.
  • The effective root goes unnoticed.
  • They are suitable for people with sensitive scalp or allergy to permanent dyes.
  • They give volume and strong hair feeling.
  • They can be used to dye the eyebrows without causing problems.

And the cons:

  • They do not allow to go from brunette to blonde (unless they are combined with ammonia).
  • There are fewer tones than in permanent coloration.
  • They do not cover gray hair as much as permanent hair.
  • If you dye at home, the application can be more cumbersome.
  • They can dry the hair by tannins.

How to get the most out of the vegetable dye

1. Previously wash the hair to remove traces of fat, which hinder vegetable coloring.

2. Do not use metallic instruments (containers, brushes, etc.). They can react with the dye and modify the final color.

3. Keep the pasta warm. Once applied, cover the hair with a shower cap and from time to time the dryer passes over.

4. Give him time. Leave the dye between 45 minutes and 2 hours.

5. And then, give extra nutrition to your mane. The tannins of the vegetables ensure a greater fixation of the pigments in the hair but they can get to dry it in excess. Therefore, after each wash, apply a mask, and between washes use a conditioner without rinsing.
